Early Childhood Development (Ages 0–5)

At Gilfach Goch Community Association (GGCA), we have been supporting children and families since 1996, helping to shape positive futures from the very earliest years. Our work is rooted in the needs of the community, with families actively involved at every stage—from identifying what’s needed to shape, deliver, and sustain the services that support them.

We believe that strong early experiences build the foundation for lifelong wellbeing. By working closely with children, parents, and carers, we provide a wide range of inclusive, community-based activities and support services that help children aged 0–5 to grow, learn, and thrive in a safe, nurturing environment. For example, Flying Start, 30-hour Childcare, Flexible and Affordable Full Day Childcare, Stay and Play Sessions, Parent and Toddler sessions.

What makes our work unique is its lasting impact across generations. Children who once attended GGCA now return as parents, bringing their own children to access the same support—creating a powerful cycle of positive early years development within the community.

“I used to come here as a child, and now I bring my own little one. I know they’re getting the same care and opportunities I had—it means everything.” – Parent of 2 year old

We also deliver intergenerational projects, bringing together young children and older people through shared activities. These experiences enrich children’s communication, confidence, and social understanding, while promoting wellbeing and purpose for older members of the community—strengthening connections across generations.

Supporting Every Aspect of a Child’s Development

Our approach supports the whole child, recognising that development is interconnected:

  • Physical Development:
Through active play, outdoor learning, and movement-based activities, children build strength, coordination, and essential motor skills—especially important where access to safe play spaces is limited.

  • Cognitive Development:
Storytelling, singing, and creative play support language, curiosity, and early learning. Children develop communication skills that help them transition confidently into nursery and school.

  • Social Development:
Group activities help children build friendships, learn to share, and develop confidence in social settings—reducing isolation and supporting smoother transitions into education.

  • Emotional Development:
A consistent, nurturing environment helps children feel safe, valued, and understood. They develop confidence, resilience, and the ability to manage emotions and express themselves.

“My child has come out of their shell so much. They’re more confident, they talk more, and they’re excited to learn.” – Parent of 3 year old

Empowering Parents, Strengthening Families

We know that parents are at the heart of a child’s development. That’s why we focus on building confidence, skills, and support networks for families.

Through everyday interactions, structured sessions, and informal support, we help parents to:

  • Build stronger relationships with their children through play, communication, and shared learning

  • Develop confidence in routines, behaviour management, and supporting development

  • Create positive home learning environments using simple, practical ideas

Our open, welcoming environment—whether through childcare, community activities, or even a chat in our café—helps parents feel supported, not judged.

“You don’t feel alone here. There’s always someone to talk to, and you learn so much without even realising it.” – Parent of 9 month old and 3 year old

Early Support When It Matters Most

Because of our trusted relationships with families, we are often able to identify additional needs early. Regular contact through childcare, community sessions, and support services allows us to guide parents on developmental milestones and offer timely support where needed.

This early intervention ensures children receive the right help at the right time—improving long-term outcomes and giving every child the best possible start.

Real Impact in Our Community

Our work is making a measurable difference for children and families:

  • Children start nursery with stronger speech, communication, and confidence

  • Improved school readiness, including routines, focus, and social skills

  • Greater emotional resilience and ability to manage change

  • Stronger friendships and social development

  • Parents feel less isolated, more confident, and better supported

  • Families establish healthy routines around sleep, nutrition, and learning

Case Study

“Building Confidence for School”
A young child aged 18 months attending our stay-and-play sessions initially struggled with communication and social interaction. Through regular engagement in storytelling, group play, and parent-supported activities, both the child and parent gained confidence. By the time the child started Flying Start sessions with us at age 2, she was able to communicate her needs, engage with peers, and settle into routines—something her parent stated would not have been possible without GGCA’s support.

A Strong Start for Life

By combining high-quality early years provision with meaningful, ongoing support for parents, GGCA ensures that children aged 0–5 have the strongest possible start in life.

Our work strengthens families, builds resilient communities, and ensures that even in areas facing multiple challenges, every child has the opportunity to thrive.

By continuing to invest in children beyond the early years, Gilfach Goch Community Association (GGCA) ensures that every child has the opportunity to grow, succeed, and feel a true sense of belonging within their community.

We recognise that children need more than just care outside of school hours—they need opportunities to be heard, to explore their interests, and to shape the activities they take part in. With children’s voices, needs, and interests at the centre of everything we do, GGCA has developed a responsive and inclusive programme of After School Club and School Holiday Provision, incorporating both open access play and structured activities designed directly from feedback gathered through consultation and evaluation sessions.

This child-led approach means that children feel valued and empowered, knowing their ideas matter and are acted upon.

“We asked for more cooking and now we do it every week—I made pasta for my family at home!” – Child, aged 8

“I like coming here because we get to choose what we do. It’s fun and everyone is kind.” –

Positive Benefits for Children

By placing children at the heart of programme design, we see a wide range of positive outcomes:

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
Children feel listened to and respected, helping them to express themselves more openly and try new experiences.

  • Stronger sense of belonging
A safe, familiar environment where children feel part of a community beyond school and home.

  • Improved social skills and friendships
Open access play and group activities encourage teamwork, cooperation, and inclusive play.

  • Greater independence and decision-making
Children take ownership of their choices, helping to build responsibility and confidence.

  • Enhanced wellbeing and enjoyment
Having fun, feeling safe, and being active contributes to improved emotional wellbeing.

Valued Partnership with Schools

Our close partnership with Hendreforgan Primary School strengthens the impact of our After School Club and Holiday Provision. Ongoing communication with school staff allows us to better understand children’s needs and provide consistent, complementary support beyond the classroom.

Feedback from the school highlights the difference our provision makes:

“We have seen a noticeable improvement in children’s confidence and social interaction, particularly for those who attend GGCA regularly. They are more settled, ready to learn, and engage more positively with their peers.” – School Staff

“The provision offers a safe and supportive environment for our pupils outside of school hours, which has a positive impact on both wellbeing and behaviour in school.” – School Representative

This partnership ensures that children experience continuity in support, helping them to feel secure, understood, and better equipped to succeed both socially and academically.

Case Study 1: Building Confidence Through Voice and Choice

“From Quiet to Confident”
A child attending After School Club initially struggled to engage in group activities and rarely spoke up. Through GGCA’s child-led approach, staff encouraged participation in activity discussions and gave the child opportunities to share ideas.

Over time, the child suggested introducing more arts and crafts sessions—an idea that was implemented. Seeing their voice heard had a significant impact:

“They don’t talk much in school, but here they feel comfortable. Now they even join in during class.” – Parent

The child is now more confident, socially engaged, and actively participates both in the club and at school.

Case Study 2: Developing Skills Beyond the Classroom

“Learning Skills for Life”
Following feedback from children, cookery sessions were introduced. One child, with limited opportunities at home, began attending regularly and developed both confidence and practical skills.

“I made wraps and showed my mum how to do it—we cooked together.” – Child, aged 9

School staff later noted improved confidence and participation in classroom activities, demonstrating how skills developed at GGCA positively transfer into school life.

A Provision Shaped by Children

Our School Holiday Provision further extends these opportunities, offering a balance of open access play and structured sessions shaped by children’s interests—from sports and creative arts to themed days and community-based activities.

“It’s the best place to come in the holidays—you’re never bored.” – Child, aged 10

Creating Opportunities That Last

Through meaningful engagement, strong partnerships, and a commitment to child-led delivery, GGCA continues to provide opportunities that go far beyond play.

Children leave our provision with greater confidence, stronger relationships, improved wellbeing, and a sense of belonging that supports them both in school and in life—ensuring they are not only supported today, but prepared for the future.
